Muscle on the Mountain returned for its second year!
Top muscle cars and racers from across the country came to compete for the $15,000 purse. SCCA National Champions, local champions, time attack drivers, and all-around strong racers put their cars through their paces at the Clearfield PA motorsports venue. Once again Viking Performance sponsored the Event.
The race began in rainy conditions on Friday and the schedule had to be adjusted due to the weather forecast. Despite the early weather challenges, the racers managed to complete multiple runs of the difficult day 1 course layout.
During Friday’s qualifying session, Cody Hunt, Ryan Mathews, Eric Peachey, and Chris Wheatcraft topped the speed charts in the Super Late Muscle Class. Sam Strano, King of the Mountain’s 2023 King, took the fifth spot in the Late Model division. Brian Coney was the fastest driver in the Early Muscle class, while Brian Johns led the Mid Model division with his UMI Equipped Camaro. Don Chaffin, driving Steve Marshall’s UMI-equipped S10 truck, claimed the top spot in the Truck category for Friday’s qualifying.
After Friday’s qualifying session, competitors, fans, and friends gathered for a community party featuring excellent cheesesteaks, cornhole, and a live band. The atmosphere at these events is unparalleled, as everyone comes together and enjoys a great time.
The Emily Whitehead Foundation held a bake sale along with other raffles and prizes during the event. EWF supports pediatric cancer charities and other local causes. In this instance, both EWF and UMI’s fantastic group of racers and friends came together to raise $8,600 to aid local father, Nate Wooster, in his battle with brain cancer. Our support and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time.
The following day had beautiful weather. Saturday’s course was a bit faster and more flowing, which always makes for a fun time. Chris Mulberry led the Super Early Muscle Class all weekend. Corey Williams and Mike Casino pushed the Mid Muscle Class to the edge of grip on Day 2 to claim first and second place in that class. Multi-time SCCA national champion Doug Rowse also moved up on Day 2 to seventh place in the Late Muscle Class. Cody Hunt occupied the top spot in the Super Late Class, while Donald Chaffin continued to lead the Muscle Truck Class.
Friday and Saturday Results
A new award introduced this year was the Operational Speed Supply Precision Strike Award. The primary criterion for this award was clean runs, indicating that drivers successfully navigated the course without hitting any cones. It was presented to the driver who achieved the fastest qualifying time without incurring any penalties. Congratulations to Matthew Braun for his exceptional performance in maintaining both precision and speed throughout the weekend.
When qualifying was finished, the course was changed to the King of the Mountain shootout course. King of the Mountain is the premier autocross in the country where competitors vie for big money in front of thousands of spectators. We encourage watching in person or online if you want to see the best cars and drivers in the country drive in high-stakes autocross under the lights.
The finale of Muscle on the Mountain was the Forgeline shootout. The top 32 cars competed in various classes for the prize money. Shootout participants raced F1 knockout style, which created high pressure from the start. Based on class counts, we selected 4 from Super Early, 8 from Early, 6 from Mid, 4 from Late, 6 from Super Late, and 4 from Truck. In each case, the field was quickly narrowed down to 3, and then to 2 in the finale to determine the winner.
2024 Muscle on the Mountain Winners
Congratulations to the winners of Muscle on the Mountain’s Forgeline Shootout! This year’s champions enjoy their share of the $15,000 purse. In each class, the first-place winner receives a $1,500 prize, the second-place winner receives $750, and the third-place winner receives $250. Additionally, a special prize awaits the first-place driver in each class – a coveted ticket to the King of the Mountain Race. In cases where the first-place driver already holds an invitation, the ticket will go to the next highest-ranking driver without one.
